Jean and Paul are identical twins. Outsiders, even their parents, cannot tell them tourniee, and call them Jean-Paul. The mysterious bond between them excludes all others; they speak their own language; they are one perfectly harmonious unit; they are, in all innocence, lovers. For Paul, this unity is paradise, but as they grow up Jean rebels against it.
The exquisite love story of Jean-Paul is set against the ugliness and pain of human existence. Gemini is a novel of extraordinary proportions, intricate images, and profound thought, in tournir Michel Tournier tells his fascinating story with an irresistible humor. Saying this, however, is a bit like saying that ‘Ulysses’ is about a man walking around Dublin, because Tournier uses the theme of twinship to explore a near infinity of dualities.

I really wanted to like this book, I found the concept very intriguing when I first came across it online, and when I read the book I thought that the writing was beautiful, the symbolism was so vivid, the ideas were depicted in such a visceral and multi-dimensional way that they really encompassed me to where I felt nearly overwhelmed.
But the misogyny hit me straight from the start, where I became acutely aware the writer was trying to get me to empathize with a guy who was essentially cheating on his wife. Like he was almost making a point that certainly you, the reader, are above lingering on michell superficial things as the morality of it when “the very nature of man is that he would leave his wife for a younger one halfway through his life.
Which brings me to another important point: Before that there’s a long discussion about Alexandre their unclewhich then once more continues after a single chapter about the twins. And what I found really exhausting about the tourhier that the book is written is that instead of telling a story it kind of gives abstract, philosophical musings on part of the author, one after the next, for countless pages– while here and there including discrete examples from the characters’ lives– not necessarily in chronological order– as to demonstrate his ideas.
And the thing is, even though different parts of the book are told from different characters’ perspectives, because all of the parts are written in that same rambling, philosophically musing way, it doesn’t really feel like you’re reading different characters.
It feels like you’re reading one character throughout the whole book, and it’s Tournier.
GEMINI by Michel Tournier | Kirkus Reviews
The novel’s summary probably inspired in you anticipation to read about a deep brotherly bond which transcends the conventional idea of love– but you don’t get that, either.
When at long last the book does get to a discussion of the twins, it’s introduced in retrospect through one brother’s awareness that twinship is generally perceived as monstrous: Is it a worthwhile read? Apart from the misogyny, yes; the writing itself is fantastic and the ideas are thought-provoking, it will not be a waste of your time. But I think you ought to know what you’re in for.
The richness and profoundity of this novel is not often encountered: It narrates the story of a french family between the thirties and the building of the Berln Wall, and expecially the lives of the twins Jean and Paul, initially forming a very close communion of souls. But one of the twins breaks out and goes to live with a mistress, eventually traveling around the world follwed by his estranged counterprt. Their history is the occasion for exploring all instances of pairing, of complementarity and contrapositions, of the fundamental duality and ambiguity of reality and the human soul.
The characters are depicted with profound and original insight of their emotions and the meaning of love and religion.
If you haven’t read this book, do it! You’ll feel enriched and nurtured while sumptuously entertained. This is a love story with a difference. Jean and Paul are identical twins, so alike that people have given up distinguishing them and simply call them Jean-Paul.
They have a relationship that is “incestuous beyond all others” meaning it exists at 4 levels: But as they grow up Jean begins to feel the suffocation of Paul’s ovoid embrace.
He runs away from Paul, and Paul embarks on a search in places that reflect their twinship and separation gemlni, Japan, Vancouver and divided Berlin.
To Paul, the identical twin is the most perfect of all beings; he feels sorry for the abject solitude of singletons and non-twins, and scoffs at their efforts to attain, through heterosexual sex, a form of imperfect, ersatz twinship. The irony is that his twinship itself is imperfect, because Jean wants none of it.
Paul’s search for Jean is a metaphysical search for wholeness that is touching and pathetic. Michel Tournier’s novel is extraordinary in its rich, dizzying explorations of dualities, complementarities, oppositions, reflections, separations, conjoinings and gmeini.
The language –beautifully translated here– is dense and lush with images, colours, smells, ideas that startle the reader with their sheer beauty and novelty. With stupendous originality, Tournier has given love a whole new dimension.
At first I enjoyed Tournier’s descriptions of the incongruous quasi-symbiotic relationship gmini the textile mill, the Surin household with the many children including the twins Paul and Jean and the Ste.
Brigitte orphanage for severely disabled children. His acid observations of the French middle class, the poor and those living in the gutter.
But then the frequent appearance of the ‘uncle’, Alexandre with his cloying homosexuality started to become increasingly irritating. It started to come together – the misogyny, in particular the obvious distaste of women as mothers and utter rejection of happy heterosexuality, became increasingly revolting.
The book is littered with unpleasant metaphors with an obsessive and repetitive mixing of garbage and homosexual sex. The relationship between tkurnier twins is potentially interesting but in the michdl of the overall context, feels suffocating. See all tournieer reviews.
