First in the influential fan-favorite series, Swords and Deviltry collects four adventure stories from Fritz Leiber, the author who coined the phrase “sword and sorcery” and helped birth an entire genre. It is significantly more entertaining, although it is as believable and realistic as Duck Talesand caters to about the same level of intellect.
I picked this up in order to fill one of the gaps in my fantasy education. In his world you will meet what are, in his own description, the two greatest swordsmen in this or any universe, Fafhrd deeviltry the Gray Mouser.
It supported the story in the few places where it dragged or at times when I was annoyed that all of the female characters were frigz. The story is only odd pages so its a quick and light read. But as a shortish story it serves as a refreshing pallet cleanser to the very dark Abercrombie books I’m reading and wsords at the moment.

For the next two decades he wrote additional stories but it was not until the s that Leiber decided to organize and integrate the stories more closely by ordering them chronologically and added connecting materials and backstories. This was an swogds enjoyable fantasy tale, but its quality seems to have withered a bit as time has passed.
However, we should also take a further lesson, and recall that Leiber was not satisfied to simply rewrite Howard’s tales, but also looked to change and challenge his own style. Personally, I like the moral ambiguity of the central characters. Woman have no likeable roles, playing controlling mother-witch, junior controlling fiance-witch, Lady Macbeth, and Ophelia.

There’s a feel of both age and timelessness about these stories–tall, fur-clad barbarian and short swordsman-thief who can vanish in the shadows–this is like sworcs the origin myth for characters we’ve known for decades. If Narnia and The Lord of the Rings can become key cultural memes in the new millennium, this bawdier, more comic and ir- reverent take on the adventure genre would seem to present an even better match with the flippant tastes of our times.
If published today, this would be called dark fantasy. Fafhrd is bewitched by the lead actress, Vlana, and finds himself caught in a love triangle between Vlana and Mara actually there is another girl he dallies with in the woods, so does that make it a love rectangle? When he came back from a mission he found his mentor brutally murdered and himself being hunted.

Howard i like this complete different style. This is the beginning, though, and the comfortable rhythm doesn’t quite gritz established yet.
Lovecraft—an overwrought author whose motto was never settle for one adjective when three or four might be squeezed into the word count. Pass it by if you are easily offended.
