Valvin think I chose well but it is clear that no single book can contain Duchamp’s work and that I could easily benefit from reading several–which I will probably do. This thoroughly researched, eminently readable book is by far the most authoritative Duchamp biography. Seems pretty exhaustively researched, is humorous and entertaining, and is also great at discussing the various main interpretations of Duchamp’s work and legacy.

I could read it every day. What Are You Looking At?: I didn’t expect a deep artistic analysis and I got in spades what I expected – a bit of insight into the thinking of Duchamp and the human being he was. Tompkins sets the context well and drops in many insights on Modern art in general. A great biography of a very influential man by a very important art critic. The more I learned the more I liked Duchamp less, but that makes for an interesting read.
Tomkins, from his unique vantage point as both an accomplished art critic and a friend of Duchamp’s since the late s, presents a piercing portrait of Duchamp, adeptly analyzing his art and career while also recounting his personal life, influences and relationships. Arriving in New York in America would become his adopted countryhe was astonished to find that his reputation – as the French artist whose Nude Descending a Staircase had been the notorious sensation of the Armory Show two years earlier – was “equaled only by Sarah Bernhardt and Napoleon”.
