You know what it all comes from – from my having a good heart. Dostoyevsky’s humour doesn’t get enough credit – we can see it in all of his longer works, but when he makes it the nucleus of a story, you’d be surprised.

He is unhappy with everything. Something strange is happening to me. In Dostoyevsky married Maria Isaev, a year old widow. This was a delightful collection. He was evidently in some confusion of mind, his words did not flow easily from his tongue, and it could be seen that it cost him a terrible effort to present a very humble request to a personage possibly his inferior in rank or condition, in spite of the urgent necessity of addressing his request to somebody.

The impression I have is that many dostkevsky only touch his longer works, but his short stories can be quite wonderful too.

The sky was so bright, and there were so many stars that, gazing upward, one couldn’t help wondering how so many whimsical, wicked people could live under such a sky.

That was because that star had given me an idea: Dostoyevsky in a new light—the romanticism portrayed in “White Nights” and “Faint Heart” is compelling and oh so sad. He was arrested in and sentenced to death, commuted to imprisonment in Siberia.
