Aug 10, Archit Nanda rated it really liked it Shelves: Antima Aranya is a subtle, slow, intoxicating tale about the search of meaning in a life that has no meaning. Set among the hills, the atanya brilliantly encompasses the beauty of the Himalayas in his mesmerizing paragraphs. It is set in a place where people come after they have led their lives. However aranyaa protagonist of this novel has come there because he has none.
He read an advertisement and came there to take care of an old man.
The woman who had issued that advertisement is now dead. Is s Antima Aranya is a subtle, slow, intoxicating tale about the search of meaning in a life that has no meaning.
Is she really dead? As we read through the novel we realize that she hasn’t actually died instead she has been divided among the people who knew her. After her death, she has been broken into memories and these memories are shared among people who knew her.
Her presence looms beneath the surface of the novel. Slowly the novel evolves or maybe it just moves to an inevitable end. The protagonist at one level has accepted his life and on the other hand he struggles to find meaning in it.
Meaning in a life, that has no meaning. Subtle, Richly layered, Elegantly prosed.
Antim Aranya : Nirmal Verma :
It is also one of the most surreal and one of the deepest books I have ever read. The book is based in an ambiguous small hill town. The town is set on a very high altitude. An altitude from which the rest of the world seems an another world. It is like the sranya of the world is ground floor and the town is the top floor or as per the morbid mood of the novel – the f ‘Antim Aranya’ is my first book by Nirmal Verma.
It is like the rest of the world is ground floor and the town is the arayna floor or as per the morbid mood of the novel – the final floor. The people who live here live on the top or the final floor from where they can clearly see the difference between where they are now and where they used to be. The story is told through the perspective of an unnamed narrator, who after reading an advertisement in a newspaper arrives in the town where he lives with Mr.
Later in the novel he meets and gets familiar with array of wonderfully built characters like – Anna, Dr. Singh, Niranjan, Murlidhar and Tiya.
Almost all of the characters are wandering in a shared wilderness and their own personal wildernesses at the same time. This novel contains various individual wildernesses which built a shared wilderness. Every character has its own emptiness, regrets, sorrows, unrequited wishes and Nirmal Verma does a great job in portraying all of these emotions. The novel is also a deep examination of a person’s existence.
The book questions that what is batter – Life as a ghost of the past or death which gives a person a new life, a life aranyaa one lives as the memories of the others?
Almost all the characters are living their lives as the ghosts of their pasts moreover the ghosts wandering in their last yet seemingly unending wildernesses. On the other hand Mrs. Diva Mehra has escaped from this wilderness via death and now she is living a new life as in the memories arnya the people who knew her.
The other two things which were also great about the book – the brilliant, beautiful and occasionally haunting atmosphere building. The reader can feel the atmosphere described in every scene.
The other thing was that how the story later becomes the story of narrator’s self discovery.
